Rehab
28. Sep 2005 at 06:18

Ok folks, time to kick off the Aussie leg.  To get it rolling, I’m asking for your input to help compile a list of ‘appropriate’ D & A rehab facilities.

For too long now we’ve been hearing our elected ‘authorities’ say that we’ll have a drug summit, or a steering committee, or that they know that it’s a huge problem.  The problem IS that they just say the words and do nothing about it.

Unfortunately they think that 2 weeks in a detox is the cure-all.  They DON’T mention that it takes 4 weeks to get into a 2 week detox.  About as good as t_ts on a bull.  When you’re ready to detox, you need it immediately, not in 4 weeks time.  Come time to go into the detox, you’re either dead, or back using again, and without the will-power to kick it.

Here in Australia, there is a distinct LACK of long-term rehab, and I’m not talking two or three month, but more like 12 months.  Addiction is a life-style habit, and you’re not going to change that around in 3 months.

Addiction is also NOT restricted by age, culture, social-economic environment, or employee – it affects everyone.  I’m so sick and tired of politicians point-scoring by targeting youth as the only ones affected.  That’s why I hid my own addiction for so long, because I was supposed be ‘adult’ and ‘mature’, and it was fear of discovery that kept me trapped for so long.

So please, let’s break the myth of the stereo-type addict, and let’s look to compiling a list of good long term facilities that provide assistance for the whole spectrum.

Oops, had better get off this soap-box   

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Rob, Some years ago I spent a few weeks in 2 different Rehabs in Sydney.
The first is the William Booth Center in Surry hills. This is run by the Salvation Army, is more "Hospital type" inviroment, and yes very religiously orientated.

The Salvo's run a number of Rehabs all over Australia.

The next one is just bloody brilliant.....

We Help OurSelves (in the phone book)   commonly known as "who's"

Heres the go..... this is a no bullshit community based program. And is much more like a big share house. They don't bullshit you and they will boot you don't want to play ball.

You drink normal coffe / you do the cooking cleaning shopping etc. There is 2 houses a couple of doors from each other. 1 is girls and 1 is boys.       There are even single mums and there kids in the girls house. And once a day you hop in the vans and go to a NA meeting.

it's been acouple of years but I truley hope this Rehab is still around....

Hope this helps

Hey Brace,

Thanks for the info.  Yep, aware of the Salvos, but I'd be interested in more info about 'WHO'.  I know of a place in SE Melb suburbs that runs similar to that, but I'm sure is not connected to the org you mentioned.

Thanks again.

Look fwd to hearing back from you.

Hi Guys,
Sorry I can't help you with WHO.
I am just popping a word in as my first post, prior to swapping this rego for my work email so I can send posts from work (on leave at the moment).
We also have a Salvos rehab in Darwin which I believe is quite admirable. Once you have done your withdrawal through the D&A mob up here (nothing great to report on them) you can go to the Salvos rehab as an in-patient. They will put you up for as short as 3 months or as long as 12 months providing they have room and you have played by the rules. You get your own room upstairs and there is a TV room and kitchen etc downstairs. There is someone stationed there who also sleeps in the building. So you can basically come and go as you please, but the gates are locked at 10 o'clock each night and open about 7am. On initial entry if you are still having trouble withdrawing, they can give you some benzos to help you sleep. It's really quite a respectable establishment and I have only heard good things about it, with the exception of those who didn't play by the rules and got kicked out. For those here in Darwin trying to stay off the gear it's good place to be. Yes there is cost. I can't remember what it is, but it's reasonable when compared to the rent prices up here. I guess that's the only catch if you are already living in Darwin, as you would have to pay two lots of rent or send all your stuff to storage for the length of your stay.
Well that's all from me this time. Take care all.
Cheers Shayne

Thanks for the info Shayne.

That's good to know.  I have a mate who was in the Salvo place in Sydney, and although he didn't see it through, from what I've heard, it's very similar to the the one in Darwin that you've described.

A good friend of mine is now in a rehab in Kinglake (Vic).  It's a long term live-in arrangement and not expensive (they take part of his Centrelink payment).  He's doing really well (went in just before Christmas).

Thanks again
