Hi debbiemorgan

Sound's like your daughter is on something. Has this just happened or been gradually progressing over a period of time.

You mentioned Speed this is the slang name for Methamphetamine, please visit the links below for more information. May I ask are you from the UK?

Well unfortunately drug users do deny they are taking anything. Test can be done to see if there is anything in her system.

I see you have tried to register? Have you had any problem's in doing so as you have not activated the account yet.

Hi Deb,

Aggressive, mood swings, chewing the inside of her mouth - all fairly strong signs of drugs use, but there may be 'other' reasons.   Are there any external marks around her face?

There could be a number of answers, but speed would have to be high on the list.  Kevin is correct - and the case worker should be recommending a urine test - that would quickly indicate any drugs in her system.  If your daughter is telling the truth, then she wont mind having the test, and the 2 of you will then have 'other' things to discuss (apart from drugs).

And yes, if she is on drugs, she will look you straight in the eye and deny everything.  What about her firends?  Do you know them or has she recently changed her circle of friends.  That's another good 'indicator'.

Sorry to throw all the questions at you.

Hi Deb

Don't know if you have seen this article on our site, it has some harrowing pictures of people who are/were addicted to Meth's

http://www.drugs-info.co.uk/newinfo/faceofmeths/facesofmeths.html

Don't want to scare you just give you some details etc.

I think the first thing to try and achieve is to get her from going to her boyfriends house as this could be the place where she is using etc.

Hope the counselling does the trick, but as Rod will tell you it could be a waste of time depending on how long she has been addicted for, long rehab may be the answer, counselling could just be the start..

Please keep us informed of your daughters progress as it may help others who read these messages.

Hi Deb

Here is some more information on Speed:-

Speed is the street name for Amphetamine. Like coke it's a stimulant that people take to keep them awake and alert. It's Britain's least pure illegal drug. It's often taken along with E.

Appearance and use: -

Amphetamines like speed are usually sold in wraps like cocaine. The powder is off-white or pinkish and can sometimes look like small crystals. Base speed is purer and is a pinkish-grey colour and feels like putty.

Crystal Meth (Methamphetamine or Methylamphetamine) is processed speed that looks like off-white rocks or crystals. Both Speed and Crystal Meth are Amphetamines although Crystal Meth is able to be smoked, it is much stronger and more likely to lead to dependence.

Prescription amphetamines like dexamphetamine are usually small white pills.

Speed's either dabbed onto the gums or sniffed in lines like cocaine using a rolled up bank note. Sometimes it's rolled up in cigarette paper and swallowed. This is called a speedbomb. It can be mixed in drinks, or injected and methamphetamine can be smoked in its 'crystal' form.

The effects kick in after about half an hour if ingested but much quicker if injected or smoked (methamphetamine) and can last for up to six hours. But it all depends on the quality of the speed. The high is followed by a long slow comedown.

Cost: -

£8 - £12 per wrap

Purity: -

Speed isn't the purest drug on the block. Most of it only contains 5-10% amphetamine. It can be cut with Vitamin C, caffeine or any other substance so you don't know what may be in it. Base speed is usually purer.

The Effects: -
  • Speed makes people feel wide awake, excited and chatty. Clubbers take it because it gives them the energy to dance for hours without getting knackered.
  • Speed was once the main ingredient in diet pills because it stops people feeling hungry.

There is a flip side: -
  • It's impossible to sit still or sleep on speed
  • The come down can make users feel irritable and depressed and can last for one or two days.
  • Speed makes some people panicky. Sniff a lot in a short space of time and expect hallucinations.

Chances Of Getting Hooked: -

You can get addicted to Speed. The more speed you take the greater chance you'll need to take more to get the same buzz.

The Risks: -
  • Speed users have died from overdose.
  • Speed puts a strain on your heart. It's bad news for people with high blood pressure or a heart condition. An overdose can be fatal.
  • Avoid taking speed and anti-depressants or alcohol. This combination has been known to be fatal.
  • Taking a lot of speed can give your immune system a battering. You could get more colds, flu and sore throats if you use it a lot.
  • Speed can lead to anxiety, depression, irritability and aggression as well as mental illness such as psychosis and paranoid feelings.
  • Too much sniffing speed and you're sneezing lumps out of your nose into a hanky.
  • Injecting any drug can cause vein damage, ulcers and gangrene. Dirty or shared needles and injecting works can help the spread of hepatitis and HIV. Injecting speed is particularly dangerous because it's cut with so much crap.
  • It's easier to overdose injecting

Hi Deb,

I'm afraid all of the warning signs are there - but never conclusive.  But given what you say about her boyfriend and his parents - well, enough said.  Parents have a lot to answer for - not to blame - but the values they instill in their children.

The first couple of steps in the rehab path are admitting the problem (which she hasn't), and breaking the influences (circle of friends).  Step 1 is the cruncher, and until there's an admission of a problem, it's going to be hard.  Unless a person wants to clean themselves up, it's going to be a futile exercise.  Let's hope and pray that the couselling session on Thursday will be start.

All you can do is make sure she knows how much you love her.  Encourage her, and dont condemn her for what she's doing.  Still let her know it's wrong and that you dont approve, but dont condemn her as a person - it's a fine line - a balancing act.  The last thing you'd want to do right now is drive a wedge between the 2 of you.

Above all, YOU need to keep yourself positive and emotionally, healthy.  There is light at the end.   Smiley
